Bra Basics

To Bra or Not to Bra…

I don’t believe that any woman with average sized breasts can feel sincerely comfortable not wearing a bra. Being a busty girl myself, I have never felt comfortable without a bra. We all struggle with the dreaded necessity of wearing a bra. But did you know that over 80% of women aren't wearing the proper bra or the right bra size. It's certainly not from lack of trying! Today, bras are as diverse as our shoe collection. Who hasn't regretted the purchase of a $200 pair of stilettos that were just too beautiful to pass up (even if they were on sale). Just as with shoes, we often purchase bras that are more frilly than functional and wonder why they just sit in a drawer. Or maybe you think you've got the right size figured out but have noticed that your shoulder straps dig in or your bra seems a little too tight around. Maybe you've noticed that the back of your bra keeps on riding higher and higher up your back or that you use your bra cups to stash your lip gloss! If you've answered yes to any of these, chances are you're not wearing the proper bra or the right bra size. But how do you make any sense of all the options: push-ups, strapless, padded, underwire, wirefree. That's where we come in. At Simply Lovely Lingerie we offer free bra fittings and consultations to help you make sense of it all. We take the time talk to you about your individual concerns, lifestyle needs and personal style preferences and make recommendations to help you select the perfect bra wardrobe so that you leave our store looking and feeling your best.

What are the signs that your bra doesn't fit properly?

  • You can’t wait to take it off!

  • The wires hurt

  • The wires poke on the side

  • The middle front rides up away from your body

  • The band rides up

  • The shoulders hurt

  • The straps fall off the shoulders

It is worth noting that one style of bra may be perfect for one woman and totally wrong for another, even if they are the same size. Different styles should be tried to find the most suitable one.

Wearing the wrong bra size can cause many problems including:

  • Neck ache

  • Shoulder ache

  • Back ache

  • Skin irritation caused by straps digging in

  • Irreversible damage to ligaments can cause breast pain and sagging

  • Wires can stick into the breast tissue, causing unnecessary pressure and discomfort

Wearing the right size bra will:

  • Be comfortable

  • Be supportive

  • Lift the bust revealing the waist to give a slimmer appearance

  • Give you confidence

  • Create better posture and a smooth silhouette under clothing

Fit Solutions

When you are purchasing a new bra, set the bra band to the loosest setting so it will last longer. Over time, the elastic material will age and stretch out. That way, when the bra does start to stretch out, you'll have more options to adjust the band for a tighter fit.

When storing your bras, try your best to line them up one cup into the next. This will avoid crushing the cups and snapping delicate lace with the hooks.

And finally, a fun way to extend the life of your bras is to create a bra wardrobe for yourself. This will really minimize the wear and tear because you're not wearing the same few and you'll be able to wear them in a longer rotation. Be adventurous! Try new styles, have fun with sexy laces, get a truly smooth look with a t-shirt bra, have the support you need with a great sports bra, and try that off the shoulder dress you've been eyeing with a strapless bra.
